Weekend on the farm

I’m back home on the family farm for the weekend, just in time for all of these crazy storms to roll through. It has been like a monsoon all day, and the house sounded like it was going to blow away. When it let up for a little while I took the truck out to check on everything. I found that our pond and creek had completely flooded out of their banks, making our pecan grove/far pasture look like a small fishing lake. Our cows of course, were right in the middle of it all…but luckily the dog was swimming out to bring them back on high ground! The water goes all the way out across the road where a truck was already stranded in the flood waters. It’s been quite the eventful day!

USA Olympic Gymnastics!

Going to the Chesapeake Arena for the Kellogs Tour of Olympic Gymnastics with my brother, Nathan, was absolutely amazing! We got to go early for the “Chalk Talk” where we saw all of the gymnasts warming up for the show, and then had the opportunity to do Q&A with a few of them. Following that we found our seats for the show, which happened to be on the FRONT ROW! By far the most exciting birthday gift ever. πŸ™‚

Watching the gymnasts perform live on all of the apparatuses was unbelievable. The TV really doesn’t do these incredible athletes justice. It was mesmerizing, especially when the guys went up on rings that were at least 20ft in the air! I felt like I was at the Cirque Du Soleil.

After the show we got to go to a meet and greet downstairs where I got autographs from all of the Fab Five, Jonathan Horton, Jonathan Orozco, Jake Dalton and Nastia Liukin!

I wish my words could do it justice, but this is truly one of those things you have to see for yourself!

Kellogs Tour

I am so excited for Thursday to be here! My brother Nathan and I are going to watch the Kellogs Tour of Gymnastics in Oklahoma City. We are lucky enough to have amazing seats AND we are going to the pre-show and meet and greet!! This is going to be one of the best birthday presents ever. πŸ™‚ Pictures and updates to come via twitter and my blog.

Believe!

I was thrilled to speak at the Oklahoma State University chapter of American Association of University Women this past week. It was a group of about 50 young college ladies who are active on campus in various organizations. AAUW has a philanthropy that raises funds for women in the military. I participated in the philanthropy fashion show earlier this year.

I shared my story of the obstacles I faced in competitive Irish dance and eventually preparing for Miss Oklahoma as well as Miss America. I hope that through hearing my journey that another young lady will not give up on her dreams, no matter if others think she isn’t good enough, smart enough, tall enough or talented enough. I stressed to the ladies that they are the one that will have to wake up in 10 years and live with a regret of not trying their best, not the people who tell them they can’t.

That mindset is what made me decide to get back into competitive Irish dance and go one last time to the Southern Region Oireachtas before I study for my TCRG! I’m excited to be back in the Irish dance world!

Post Miss Oklahoma Appearances

I was honored to still have requests for appearances after I gave up the Miss Oklahoma title in June. One of the first appearances I had was back at Chesapeake Energy Corporation where I taught an etiquette class to the college interns. At the end of the month, I traveled to Missouri to speak at the National Holstein Convention on the importance of being an ambassador for the dairy industry. I was also asked to speak at the Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Conference in Oklahoma City where I had the opportunity to share my story of how 4-H, FFA, and eventually Miss Oklahoma all gave me a voice to promote agriculture and the dairy industry.

I’ve also continued my work with Dairy Max through radio promotions for Fuel Up to Play 60, speaking at the Schools for Healthy Lifestyles luncheon and the Ag in the Classroom summer conference.

One incredibly exciting event I was recently asked to attend was “The Big Event” hosted by Bob Funk of Express Ranches. My brother and I had the opportunity to have dinner at the table with Bob Funk and some of his family, the Governor Mary Fallin and her husband, Lt. Governor Todd James and his wife. It was amazing to see how much Express Ranches is doing not only for the agricultural industry of Oklahoma, but for Oklahoma’s economy as well.

This past week I spoke at the Meeker Lake Association banquet on the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle through good nutrition and exercise. I was also able to share the importance of setting an example for young children to follow, because healthy habits are formed at a young age.

I was also asked to do a photoshoot at Cross Timbers Marina at Skiatook Lake to promote their wedding options. We did a mock wedding photo shoot on the wedding barge, in the cabin and on the pontoon boat! If you’ve never been out to Skiatook Lake, you should definitely go for a visit. They have beautiful camp sites, great cabins for families, the Lakeside Grill serves delicious food and it was recently named the cleanest lake in Oklahoma!

Miss Oklahoma 2012 week!

Wow! I can’t believe that the week is already over! On Saturday morning the ladies checked in for the week and had a brief orientation on the job of Miss Oklahoma. Immediately following orientation they began a long week of rehearsals for the 40th Anniversary show! On Sunday morning, I had the chance to speak to all of the contestants, some teen contestants and even some parents at the chapel service at ORU. We were so blessed to have Lauren and Randy Faram there to lead our music!

On Monday, I had media interviews bright and early with channel 6 and channel 8 news. After the interviews we all went to Kiwanis luncheon where Lauren Nelson-Faram gave one of the most incredible and inspirational talks I’ve ever heard. She emphasized the importance of the having a love for everyone, a humble spirit, and a servants heart. Also on Monday, Mu and Omega groups began interview! Tuesday morning, I went to more media interviews at Fox 23 and Channel 2 while Sigma group went to judges interview. That night preliminaries began! It was an incredible show that featured several of our formers. We truly are blessed in Oklahoma to have such a close sisterhood of former Miss Oklahoma’s and Miss America’s who continue to stay involved in the organization.

Once the preliminaries began, the week just flew by! On Thursday I performed with a troupe of Irish dancers instead of solo for the opening number. The “Miss O’Dancers” turned out to be quite a hit with the audience which was incredibly exciting! We spent hours and hours preparing our dance for the Miss Oklahoma stage, so I was thrilled that it got such a good reception. Also that night, Jason (My choreographer from Miss America) and I performed an Irish dance duet! On Saturday, the Miss Oklahoma board hosted a farewell dinner for me! I was honored to receive a Chickasaw tribal blanket from Chickasaw Governor Anaotubby, and a gorgeous silver tea set from the board! The troupe performed again on final night in the opening number and I danced my Miss America routine later in the show. I crowned the beautiful Miss Oklahoma 2012, Alicia Clifton! Look out Miss America…here she comes!

Immediately after the show, we went to the awards celebration where I was surprised by a beautiful glass crown case from the local directors association! Now my Miss Oklahoma crown can be on display with my Miss Oklahoma and Miss America awards! I can’t imagine a more incredible way to end this amazing year. Though this is the end of my chapter as Miss O, I know that I will continue to stay involved in the organization and I’m excited to see what God has in store next!

I’m humbled and honored to have served as Miss Oklahoma 2011!

My final weeks as Miss Oklahoma 2011

In the weeks leading up to Miss Oklahoma 2012, I had some really fun and memorable appearances. In mid-May I traveled to Wisconsin for the National Dairy Club Meeting at Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy. Pagel’s is the largest family owned operation in the state of Wisconsin milking over 4,000 cows! I had the opportunity to share my story of how growing up on the farm and all of my involvement in the dairy industry has led me to where I am today as well as emphasizing the importance of promoting the dairy industry today. From Wisconsin I flew into Minnesota and spoke to the 65+ Princess Kay of the Milky Way contestants about using their position to serve as an ambassador for the dairy industry. I thoroughly enjoyed both appearances and was thrilled to receive more invitations for speaking engagements after I give up the Miss O crown!

The following week I had the opportunity co-host “All About You” on Ok-52! The next few days were spent taping my farewell, final dress fittings and my final presentation to our amazing Kiwanis Club of Tulsa! On the Tuesday and Wednesday before Miss Oklahoma week, I drove to Springfield, Missouri for the “Dairy Days Camp.” This was a 4-H camp for youth ages 9-18 from Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas. I spoke about my involvement inthe dairy industry and how it helped me in my role as Miss Oklahoma.

It was a great way to end my year as Miss Oklahoma with several appearances, especially since they were directly tied to my platform and what I am most passionate about! I have been so blessed this year!

The last 30 Days…

Spring has been unbelievably busy!! I am so grateful to still have appearances this late in the year. It’s certainly welcome when I realize how soon this incredible journey is coming to an end. In addition to appearances there are a lot of things to get done before Miss Oklahoma week. I have been meeting and taking sponsor pictures, taking program book pictures, writing my farewell for the program book, and getting my wardrobe lined up! On top of that, I am moving out of the Miss O apartment and into my new house.

I also got to spend 3 wonderful days down in Florida with Debbie! Even though it rained every day that we were there, it was incredibly relaxing! I read the Hunger Games and caught up with my incredible traveling companion! She is truly a gem and such a classy woman!

The day after I came home from Florida, I spoke at the State FFA Convention at the Cox Convention Center. That was a dream come true. I remember being an FFA member in my blue and gold jacket and listening to all of the speakers…I never dreamed that one day I would be given the chance to be that speaker! The following day I visited Centennial Elementary in Edmond where I presented my program “The Road to Success” to 3rd-5th grade students. Friday I traveled to Crescent schools for the Healthy Living Fair and spoke to students about healthy eating habits and staying active. On Saturday I rode in the Prague Kolache Festival Parade and performed my talent at the Grand Stand later that afternoon! It was blazing hot, but so much fun! The entire week of appearances were wonderful!

Sunday was an incredibly busy and exhausting day, but it was productive! Jason Hays (my Irish dance choreographer from Miss A) drove down for dance practice. We were in the studio from 10am to 6:30pm…needless to say my feet were KILLING me!

Monday I spent time with the Kiwanis Club of Tulsa. They are such an amazing group of some of the most generous people I have ever met. It is absolutely mind blowing how much work they put into putting on the Miss Oklahoma pageant. They give so much of their time to make sure that we have the best state production possible! Tuesday, Ms. Freddie and I went to Sallisaw for the Senior Girls’ Tea and lunch with the Rotary. The next morning I was at Chandler Schools to speak at the Positive Peer Forum assemblies. We had one assembly for 7-9th grade, followed by a high school assembly for 10-12 grade. Today, my mom traveled with me to El Reno for the Aggie Club Banquet at Redlands Community College. What a great group!

Tomorrow, we are off to Grandfield school, home of former Miss Oklahoma Julie Payne! On Saturday I will be riding in the Netti Davenport Parade as Grand Marshall and speaking at the Davenport Alumni Banquet! What a fun way to spend my 5th year high school reunion! On Mother’s Day I will be at Council Road Baptist Church with my family, and I will even have the opportunity to share with the congregation how blessed I am to have such an incredible mother!

Monday will bring another Kiwanis luncheon, then I’m off to Minnesota and Wisconsin! More to come soon!
